Would you take dance lessons from a teacher who is not very good?
30th May 2010
I recently answered an ad for someone looking for a salsa dance partner. I am very good at salsa and also ballroom. The ad said that they were looking for someone to practice with. It turns the person wants someone to take dance lessons with them. They already chose the teacher and the place. I am very picky about my dance teachers. My last teacher used to compete in World level competitions. It is really irritating taking from a teacher who does not know good technique.
No, I would not take lessons from anyone that was just mediocre. Do not waste your money and find a better dance partner. The dance partner sounds like a cheapskate.

I would not take any class with a mediocre teacher if I had the choice. If possible, ask your partner to look for another teacher with you. If not, drop him/her. If he/she is bringing you down and you have no reason to stay with him/her, then there is no reason to sit though this teacher. If you are fiends (which I doubt since you answered an ad, then it would be a different story.

I’ve done that when no better option was available. There may be something you can learn from this instructor anyway, though you’ll have to be careful to filter out the bad advice. It sounds like you may have gone to that studio once or twice. You may be able in the next hour or two to discern whether there’s anything to be gained at all, and if your share of expenses is worth the trouble. If there’s little to be gained, then it’s time for a frank discussion with your new partner, who sounds a couple of levels behind you at any rate.

If this teacher does not know good technique as you have mentioned, both you and your partner could start getting into some bad habits. To be a great dance teacher, you don’t necessarily need to be a great dancer but you must have impeccable knowledge of technique and have the ability to convey that knowledge to your students.
Would I take dance lessons from a teacher who does not know good technique? No way in H*ll I would!
